Homegrown
What 100 days of living off the land taught this farmer about self-sufficiency, community and finding new purpose.
Muster Dogs star Cilla Pershouse set herself the daunting challenge of living for 100 days on homegrown food only. She had the advantage of garden beds planted with veggies, free-rage lambs, beef, and hens to lay eggs on her Queensland farm - and a community of neighbouring homegrowers she could barter with. But the challenges began on day one - starting with coffee withdrawal.
Nature can be a fickle mother - as any gardener knows - and there were many more upsets to come. Yet Cilla stuck to her plan. After all, she had announced it on social media and the response had been overwhelmingly supportive. Using all her resolve, a good dash of adaptability and drawing on the resources around her, she planted, grew, (replanted), harvested and thrived.
What came out of the challenge was a new sense of self, a lovely suite of recipes, great gardening tips and an online and physical community who supported her throughout. This is a book about self-sufficiency - and its limits - perfect for the uncertain times we find ourselves in.
